There is a Field is now a film

“There is a Field not only helps us see ourselves as the other, but also in the other -- a sacred function of art, no matter the form. Palestinians have shown so much courage, dignity, steadfastness and fortitude in the face of unrelenting oppression; how could their struggle not mirror the experience of Black communities in the United States?”

Tens of thousands of New Yorkers are locked behind bars

Shannon sent the following for posting:

As you all know too many incarcerated people have been infected with the coronavirus and many have died. Can you help us protect people who are currently incarcerated by taking the action below so we can encourage Governor Cuomo to protect people in jails and prisons from COVID? ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌  ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌  ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌  ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌  ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌  ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌
Tens of thousands of New Yorkers are locked behind bars in jails and prisons where COVID is raging. Thousands have been infected with the virus and at least 30 people have died. As case numbers surge, the state has done very little to stop the spread, and it's unclear when those who are locked up will have access to a vaccine. Governor Cuomo is barring almost all incarcerated people from getting vaccinated, even though shots are available to others living in congregate settings – like homeless shelters – and to staff at correctional facilities.

TAKE ACTION: Tell Governor Cuomo to protect people in jails and prisons from COVID.

People's Campaign for Parole Justice

On February 16th, beginning at 9:30 AM, the People's Campaign for Parole Justice, a statewide, grassroots coalition, will hold a special Advocacy Day in honor of Black History Month. The theme of the day, “Parole Justice is Racial Justice” will highlight the continued harm communities of color face from systems designed to operate through violent policy, structure, and culture to oppress and criminalize Black and brown people, families and communities.

The People’s Campaign for Parole Justice fights for fair and meaningful release opportunities for incarcerated people in NYS prisons with the primary goals of the campaign centered around decarceration and family reunification. Through the passage of the Elder Parole and Fair + Timely Parole bills, these two, transformative parole reform bills will collectively ensure that every person in NY State prison has a fair and meaningful opportunity to return home during the course of their incarceration. They will prevent aging, sickness, and death in prisons, reunite families and communities, and help to uproot NY's racist criminal legal system.

Join us on February 16th to gather in community, meet with legislators, and promote the Elder and Fair and Timely Parole Bills.

RSVP to attend at bit.ly/feb-16-advocacy-day.

ENJAN meeting on Executive Order 203

Reminder: On February 2, the City of Poughkeepsie released a draft police reform report in conjunction with Executive Order 203, and announced a public meeting for Wednesday, February 10, at 6:00 PM for public comment on the draft. Many ENJAN members may attend this public meeting, but we would like to confer with each other beforehand. In addition, the City's meeting conflicts with ENJAN's regular meeting.

Accordingly, at the end of our 2/3 special ENJAN meeting, we decided to hold yet another special ENJAN meeting on Monday, February 8, from 6:00 PM -- 7:00 PM to discuss the City's draft report and upcoming public meeting. In addition, our regular ENJAN meeting will not start at its usual 6:30 PM time, but will bepostponed until the end of the City's public meeting, which will be at an undetermined time.
