KNOW YOUR RIGHTS: DISCRIMINATION IN SCHOOLS

 ENJAN Members,

We wanted to make everyone aware of an upcoming Webinar on "Discrimination in Schools" being hosted by The New York State Division of Human Rights.  The Webinar will take place on February 23rd from 5:30 to 6:30 pm.  In light of recent reports of racist attacks in our local schools, it is even more important for both students and parents to understand their rights.  You can register for the Webinar by clicking the link in the email below.  Thank you.

KNOW YOUR RIGHTS:

DISCRIMINATION IN SCHOOLS

Greetings,

It is said that education is “the great equalizer.” Education opens the path to more opportunities and a brighter future regardless of a person’s background. In New York State, in addition to the constitutional right of all children to a sound and basic education, students are legally protected from discrimination in educational settings by the Human Rights Law. This Black History Month the NYS Division of Human Rights (DHR) will host a Know Your Rights event on Discrimination in Schools. We invite students, parents, guardians, educators, or those who are thinking of applying to an educational institution to join us this February 23, 2022 at 5:30 pm.

Countless studies have found that non-white children are often treated differently (to their detriment) than their white classmates, by school administrators, teachers, and staff. These studies also point out that bias in any facet of education has the potential to impact a child’s entire life. In this Zoom webinar, you will learn how New York State law impacts these issues and what legal recourse is available to combat them.
