September 23 from noon to 3:00 pm

 ENJAN Members,

We are passing on the information below on some upcoming events in support of Daniel's Law. As many of you know, Daniel's law is focused on reducing police involvement in mental health crisis responses, focusing instead on having mental health professionals lead the response. ENJAN Poughkeepsie strongly supports this proposed new legislation at the state level. The Albany, NY event will take place on September 23rd from noon until 3:00 pm. Please consider turning out to show your support. We also encourage you to write your local state legislators to voice your support for this bill. Thank you.

Mae Parker-Harris

Goodbye, Mae

Hundreds gathered in the Earline Patrice Park to say goodbye to a community leader and tireless human rights advocate. It seems like everyone there had a story to tell of Mae's dedication and bravery when fighting for racial justice. She used to stop her car when the police arrested a Black motorist or walker. And she would get her camera out, just so the police would know someone was watching them. And that was thirty years ago.

Mae has her own special place on that "moral arc of the universe," as Martin Luther King described it. The reason that arc "bends toward justice" is the millions of people like Mae Parker-Harris who have never quite given up on our country. Rest in peace!

Sat, Sep 9th at Waryas Park

ENJAN will be tabling, along with other local organizations. Feel free to come by our table anytime during the event if you would like to help out with the tabling. Or just stop by to say hello.

Diversion, as opposed to incarceration

April 2023

ENJAN Members,

The New York State Bar Association (NYSBA) has just published a Final Report on the results of their Task Force on Mental Health And Trauma Informed Representation. The full report can be reviewed here:

Among the recommendations in the report, NYSBA recommends that New York State "pass Treatment Not Jail Act (S1976, A1263), or consistent legislation that would provide courts with guided discretion needed to authorize diversion, as opposed to incarceration, for people entangled in our criminal justice system who need services and support for mental disabilities."

This support is added to the support for the bill documented in a May 13, 2022 memorandum.

Thank you,
The ENJAN Curators

Develop skills in advocating for legislative change

ENJAN Members,

On May 11th and 12th, the Advocacy Institute is offering a 2-day in-person training session to help organizers develop their skills in advocating for legislative change. This session, which is focused on the Hudson Valley region, will be held at the Franklin D. Roosevelt Presidential Library in Hyde Park, NY. The training is free to members of the Advocacy Institute and costs $60 per person for non-members. You can read more about this training in the email below.

Note that the Advocacy Institute is allowing only two participants from each organization, so ENJAN would be limited to two attendees. One ENJAN member has agreed to pay the $60 cost for up to two ENJAN members to attend the training. If you are available and interested in the training, please send an email to Kevin Carswell at kgcarswell@gmail.com. Kevin will then help with the registration. The two available openings will be filled on a first come, first serve basis. Please do not submit a request unless you are sure you are available on May 11th and 12th to attend the training. Also please note that "Participants must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 in order to attend this training."

Thank you.

April Lobby Day

April Lobby Day
Please mark April 18th on your calendar for a hybrid virtual and in-person lobby day! We wont have as much transportation support, so the group going up to

Legislative Updates
Legislators continue to sign onto our bills every day! For our constitutional amendment bill, the No Slavery in NY Act  (S225/A3412), we are making great progress- we now have 29 assembly co-sponsors (goal is 76) and 17 senate co-sponsors (more than halfway to our goal of 32!). Fun fact- with the sign-on of Republican Assemblymember Michael Novakhov today, we officially have bi-partisan support for this bill!!

Tell your legislators to sign onto No Slavery in NY!
Check if your senator is signed on here and your assemblymember is signed on here. If not, call their office using this dialer on our website and let them know that passing this bill is important to the people that elected them.

Check out these media pieces on our movement!
  • Lead sponsor Assemblymember Harvey Epstein and steering committee member Jesse Koklas discuss our campaign on PBS' MetroFocus. Link here.
  • Steering committee members Wilfredo Laracuente and Jesse Koklas on radio show/podcast Abolition Today. Link here to listen as well as wherever you get your podcasts.
Working Group Meeting Cancelled Tomorrow and Next Week
Our Wednesday working group meetings are cancelled for the rest of March as folks focus on passing budget bills, but will restart the first week of April on the 5th!
